Rip Off was covered last month, and is an intriguing game from the early history of co-op. Published in the Golden Age of the arcades, this game is among first to team two human players against AI opponents. The object is to protect the triangular fuel cells in the center of the screen from being stolen by enemy tanks. Survival modes in modern co-op games are very similar to the gameplay of this Co-Op Classic from 30 years ago.
In arcades just over a decade after Rip Off comes this run and gun four player shooter. Capitalizing on the war in the Persion Gulf which was all over the news at the time, Desert Assault is a perfect snapshot into the state of the art in 1991 video gaming. A large variety of weapons, vehicles to drive, and different perspectives, as well as over-the-top dialogue from the big bag terrorist leader make Desert Assault a memorable experience.
