Up to two friends can be summoned. There are three items available to do so. One puts you in a pool to be summoned by anyone, the next allows to be summend by a specific player and the last makes all players visible that are waiting for a co-op partner to the host. You can set a password for your session to make sure no one can disturb your party. Communication ingame happens using emotes.
There are restrictions for multiplayer however: You can explore the open world as well as all the dungeons but can't play through the whole story together. Once the area boss is killed, everyone returns to their own session. In addition the horse as well as the fast travel system are not available. And if a friend dies, they are teleported back to their world. If the host dies, everyone is kicked from the session.
Progress is also only saved for the host e.g. boss kills will only count for the host.
