A few days ago, Atari announced a major update for Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. This came as a surprise because the collection has already been out for a year, but it seems that Atari has a series of content updates planned for it. The first such free update arrived this week and adds 12 games to the collection, including 11 Atari 2600 titles and one Atary Lynx game (yay!).
The recently released "Holiday Update" adds the following games:
Adventure II (homebrew) (Atari 2600) Aquaventure (prototype) (Atari 2600) Bowling (Atari 2600) Circus Atari (Atari 2600) Double Dunk (Atari 2600) Maze Craze (Atari 2600) Miniature Golf (Atari 2600) MotoRodeo (Atari 2600) Return to Haunted House (homebrew) (Atari 2600) Save Mary (prototype) (Atari 2600) Super Football (Atari 2600) Warbirds (Atari Lynx)None of these games feature co-op, sadly, but new content is always nice. Although I've heard that the Atari 2600 version of Adventure II isn't very good, many of these games look quite interesting for Atari 2600 software. Warbirds, a first-person flight combat game for Lynx, is certainly the most standout title from the update; it was a technical marvel at its time of release.
The Atari 50 collection now boasts 115 classic games, 11 of which support local co-op. Atari promises multiple updates in 2024 that will include both games and behind-the-scenes content, so the collection will keep on getting better. Read our co-op review for all the details!
Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration sells for $39.99 on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and Steam.
