Beyond Co-Op, June 6th to June 12th

Welcome to Beyond Co-Op, a weekly piece that talks about industry stories that may or may not be related to co-op gaming.

The stories for this week:

- E3 This Week
- inFAMOUS 2 and Motorstorm Apocalypse Announced
- Civilization V Coming September 21
- New Mortal Kombat Announced
- Portal 2 Pushed to 2011, Any Valve E3 Event Outright Canceled

E3 This Week

Last week I talked about how unexcited I am about this year’s E3. I’m still not super excited since I figure there are going to be a lot of sequels announced and shown off and nothing much in the way of interesting new IPs, but I could certainly be wrong.

The Colony of Gamers Network (which Co-Optimus is a part of) will be on hand in Los Angeles and covering things both co-op (here) and general (Colony of Gamers). Two people from here will be representing and four from CoG. I will be balancing my coverage over here with a daily link platter of games that aren’t specifically co-op, but may be interesting to Co-Optimus’ readers. I will spend most of my time posting news and covering the press conferences live from home using CoveritLive over at Colony of Gamers, so please feel free to stop by there along with what Nick and Jason will be doing from the floor and the gang from CO on the homefront.

inFAMOUS 2 and Motorstorm Apocalypse Announced

Sony decided to not hold all its cards until their presser on Tuesday. inFAMOUS 2 was unveiled in the new Game Informer magazine and since I haven’t gotten my issue yet I’m wondering if a timetable was given or not. We’ll know more at E3 I’m sure. Then earlier this week Sony also announced Motorstorm Apocalypse where you will be driving through a post-apocalyptic world. Sounds interesting and I’m sure this will be at E3 as well.

Civilization V Coming September 21

Start asking for time off as 2K announced that Civilization V will be out on September 21. If this game is anywhere near as good as Civilization IV a lot of people’s lives will cease to exist on that day.

New Mortal Kombat Announced

No big surprise here after Warner Bros. acquired the company. The game will supposedly return to its 2D roots with the new game and it was be back to the land of Mature with fatalities making a re-entry after the Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe game. Ed Boon’s development group has been renamed as well to NetherRealm Studios and the game is due out sometime in 2011.  Supposedly it will be shown on the E3 floor as well.

Portal 2 Pushed to 2011, Any Valve E3 Event Outright Canceled

The confusion I had last week is now gone as Valve announced both Portal 2’s pushback on release and that there would be no event covering any game or new tech at E3 as previously planned. Portal 2 will still be shown on the E3 show floor, but it has been pushed back to a release date of 2011. This also means there probably is not any Left 4 Dead 3 announcement or a new Source engine announcement that will be unveiled.
