Beyond Co-Op - April 15 through April 22, 2012

Guys. GUYS! Did you know that there are games out there that AREN'T CO-OP? You did? Yeah, me too. Though we prefer co-op with our gaming, there's plenty of awesome single player or competitive multiplayer stuff out there, too. Each weekend, we take a look at a few of the biggest non co-op news stories that caught our eye.

God of War: Ascension coming to PS3

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Kratos is coming back. The God of War series has been through three numbered iterations, plus a few prequels here and there. Most folks were expecting God of War 4 to be announced, especially with the, shall we say, tantalizing ending of God of War 3. But it's back to the prequel well once again, with a story chronicling Kratos' origin in more detail. Check out the bloody yet elegant trailer below.

Trials Evolution breaks day one XBLA sales record

The title pretty much says it all for this one. The most recent Xbox Live Arcade release, Trials Evolution, had the highest day one sales of any game in the download service's history. No hard numbers were given, but it's still an impressive feat, given the large number of quality releases available on XBLA in the past. It remains to be seen whether the racer sequel will maintain its best selling status. Still, that's a lot of people plunking down $15 all in one day. Congratulations to developer Redlynx!

New Super Mario Bros. 2 headed for 3DS

You have to love Nintendo and their naming conventions. New Super Mario Bros. was released for the DS in 2006, and it was quite great, a triumphant return to 2D platforming. A sequel, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, was released in  2009, and I bet you can guess on which platform. On the home console, four players could all "work together" (I still stand by my assessment that the co-op was merely average) which was a major innovation to the series. So, naturally, the next game will be back on a handheld, this time the 3DS, and called New Super Mario Bros. 2, even though it's really the third game ARGH MY HEAD JUST LOOK AT THE PRETTY PICTURE. (No word on co-op.).
