Destiny 2: Witch Queen Stream Recap

It's become almost a running gag between Locke and me. When a new expansion or season of Destiny 2 drops and I start gushing about it, Locke inevitably asks me, "is Destiny 2 good now?" To which I will inevitably answer with some variation of, "there's never been a better time to play Destiny 2." I truly believe in that, too, as Bungie continually improves upon everything they've done and that is no more apparent than in Witch Queen. You can play through the entire campaign on "Legendary" difficutly, which will feel familiar to Halo fans; there's a new weapons crafting system so you can make that god roll you've always wanted instead of hunting for it; the story is fantastic even if you haven't delved deep into the lore; and the Light subclasses are getting reworks (starting with Void) to line up more with the flexibility/customization of the Stasis subclass. And the new raid... Oh! The new raid. The best one they've ever done. There's so much fun to be had!

Destiny 2: Shadowkeep Festival of the Lost and Pit of Heresy Stream Recap

Our full stream was almost 2 hours long, so I've split it up into a few different segments. The first is Mike, Nick, and myself attempting to make our way through nine branches of the "Haunted Forest" as we discuss what the Festival of the Lost event is and how, theoretically, you could make it through nine branches.

During the stream, we did our best to divide our discussions into a few distinct sections as we run around the Moon. First, Locke talks a bit about being a returning player to the game and going through the "new player experience." Granted, he has some idea of the general gameplay and mechanics, so he's got some background knowledge, but definitely hasn't kept up with things over the past year. Mike then chimes in around the 13:00 mark to give his thoughts on how things are looking as someone who's played a bit here and there over the past year, and then I take over and go through a bunch of what I like as someone that's played pretty faithfully since Destiny 2's launch back in 2017.

A quick note: throughout this article you'll see me refer to "Year 1" of Destiny 2, which is shorthand for the base game, the "Curse of Osiris" expansion, and the "Warmind" expansion. Here's a list of everything included in the base Destiny 2: New Light game without purchasing the "Shadowkeep" or "Forsaken" expansions:

Destiny 2's Steam Linking on PC is Live Today, Cross Save Tomorrow

The other key bit of news here is that the Steam/Blizzard account linking for PC players starts today. After Bungie split from Activision earlier this year, everyone was curious whether the game would stay with the Battle.Net launcher, which is Blizzard's launcher and Blizzard is a subsidiary of Activision. When the Shadowkeep expansion was revealed, Bungie also announced that Destiny 2 would be moving to Steam on the PC and there would be account migration so existing PC players would not lose any progress, including any Silver purchases they have made and expansions/annual passes purchased via Battle.Net. This process goes live today and (here's the key bit) must be done before PC players can enable Cross Save on their account. Details on what to do can be found here but keep in mind that you'll still be playing Destiny 2 on Battle.Net until the game officially goes live on Steam on October 1.

Destiny 2: Season of Opulence Stream Recap and Impressions

Bungie has been making some good moves lately with their first-person, MMO-lite, loot shooter. The next big content expansion for the game, titled "Shadowkeep," comes with a free-to-play version that includes all Year 1 content of the game along with all Crucible maps and Gambit, which came as part of Forsaken. Additional content - such as Forsaken, the content that's been released year, and the forthcoming Shadowkeep - can be purchased "à la carte" and Bungie will make sure that you can get caught up to the minimum Power requirements for that content. For instance, this season has an introductory quest that provides you and all your alts with a bunch of 690 gear so you can start playing the new stuff (the Menagerie) right away. Alongside all that, cross-save is coming this Fall so you can pick up and play on any platform you wish (a few caveats to this), there are changes coming to the Eververse store to shift the non-premium currency (Bright Dust) to just be "play-to-earn," and "Armor 2.0" will revamp your gear in (hopefully) a good way.

On the whole, I think Destiny 2 is in a pretty good state. There are a great variety of activities to do and pursue, the new exotic weapons are all pretty fun to use, and randomized rolls on gear means you're once again chasing after your "god rolls." That's not to say that there aren't some issues still - like everything with enhancement cores and leveling/masterworking gear, and getting all your powerful gear for just a couple slots - but I know that if I've only got 20 or 30 minutes to spare, I can hop in and get something done that feels like progress. That being said, I'm kind of split on the new content.
