Survival Mode
]]>Let's look at the upcoming fighters. Yagyu Ranzou is a ninja from the NES and arcade versions of Double Dragon 3. Chin Seimei, a Chinese martial artist, originates from the same NES game. Sonny Lee is the most interesting, as he debuted in the unpopular arcade version of Double Dragon 3 and has only ever returned in Double Dragon IV before now. Sonny Lee is the brother of Billy and Jimmy Lee, but he will look and play differently than them in Gaiden. All three characters can be played in all of Gaiden's modes, including the Survival and Versus modes that will be added in the April 4 update.

New upgrades (seemingly for all modes) and unlockable stages for Survival and Versus will further round out the package. Adding survival modes to beat 'em ups as DLC is a move pioneered by Streets of Rage 4 and TMNT: Shredder's Revenge - but those games charged for the privilege.

Billy and Jimmy's hair colors are reversed, but that's actually fairly common in the Double Dragon series. All three characters appear in Double Dragon Gaiden.
Story Mode, the main mode of the game, has a Roguelike structure. Players will select from four different missions, each featuring a different gang with unique enemies and bosses. One mission stars The Killers, led by Willy, the boss of the original Double Dragon. Another features The Royals, whose leader is Duke, the final boss of Super Double Dragon and next to last boss in Double Dragon for Neo Geo.

It's a reboot that retells the story of the first game, taking place in a post-apocalyptic 1990s version of New York.
Double Dragon Gaiden, like Neon, is a reboot that starts its own fresh continuity. The original game takes place in post-apocalyptic New York (probably), and so does Gaiden, moving the timeline forward to the 1990s. The city has been overtaken by multiple gangs this time, including the Killers, the Triangle, and the Okada. The Shadow Warriors, the traditional Double Dragon enemy gang, seem to be absent. Their leader Willy is still here, though, leading the Killers. Maybe a translation issue?
