Things definitely started out rough as both Locke and I struggled to find our footing - according to Steam the last time I played the game was late 2015 - so almost a full 5 years. Thankfully after one or two practice runs, we remembered how to play.
]]>For anyone who is unfamiliar with the title, up to four players team up to try and make it to the surface of an alien world after their escape pod crashes on it. Each level tasks your team with first finding the exit and then successfully carrying your only power source to it. There's a catch, though. Every time you open a door, monsters spawn from the darkness to take down your crew and your power source. You can build offensive and defensive turrets for support, but the odds will increasingly be against you, so plan your moves carefully.
If you're a fan of Dungeon of the Endless, you're probably curious as to what the update and DLC add to the game .You're in luck, since I'm about to highlight just that! Organic Matters includes the following:
In addition to the new merchant, a new item - "The Time of Sands" - has been added that will automatically resuscitate the player who holds it. That can definitely be key in later levels where survival is quite often fleeting.
Back in April, Amplitude Studios - developers of Dungeon of the Endless, Endless Legend, and Endless Space - had a free weekend on Steam where they let users play Dungeon and Legend for free and then, if they wanted, pick it up for a reduced price. If you just played either game, you helped contribute to a larger goal to add new content to both. That content is now live with the "Australium" update.
One of the main issues with the game's 4 person co-op modes was a complete lack of Save/Load options that were present in the single player. This typically resulted in "all or nothing" sessions where, at some point, you and your friends eventually A) Died horribly to some demon robot things B) Decided that you had to go to bed and give up the hours of progress you'd just made, or C) Made a blood oath with each other declaring that playing Dungeon of the Endless was your life now and nothing (except maybe starvation) would stand in the way of you getting to the 10th floor.
Let's see what Jeff Spock, Narrative Director on Dungeon has to say about the beasties lurking in the depths of this dungeon.
It's damn good. The game combines elements from so many genres: tower defense, RPG, RTS, and Rogue-Like and mixes it into something that plays completely different than anything out there. It's difficult to describe just how you play Dungeon of the Endless.
The game enjoyed quite a lot of love since it showed up on Steam late 2013, and as a big ol' "thanks!" to all of their fans, Amplitude has put together a video thanking each and every one of the players, by gamertag, who participated in their Early Access. And that's super cool.
For those not in the know, Dungeon of the Endless is a Roguelike game with some tower defense and RPG elements thrown in. You play as the crew and inmates on a prison ship headed to colonize an unknown world. Only when your ship is trashed by the planet's defenses do you discover it was not unknown at all! As the survivors of the wrecked vessel, you must gather guards and prisoners alike to set up defenses and explore the high-tech dungeon you crashed into in order to protect your ship's generator.
