Frontier Expo Unveils Next Year's Plans for Elite: Dangerous

Currently, you and up to three other folks can form a group called a "Wing" and head out on an adventure. If all players have the same mission, then they can all choose it from their log and complete it jointly and get individual rewards (they cannot, though, share a missions with other members of their Wing). Sometime in Q1 of next year, Frontier Development will implement new "Wing Missions," which are specific co-op goals/objectives for you to complete with friends. This news came in a 30-minute presentation during the recent "Frontier Expo," the video of which you can find below.

PlayStation 4 Version of Elite: Dangerous Dated

The Legendary Edition of the game, which will be available for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, will include the base game, the Horizons Season Pass, and 1,000 Frontier points, the premium in-game currency that can be spent on cosmetic items. GameStop currently has this listed for $49.99, and the "Digital Deluxe" version of the game (which has all the same content, only it's digital) will likely run the same amount based on the listing over in the GB PSN store.

Elite Dangerous Adds Avatars, Co-Op Ships in Commanders 2.3 Update

The latest Elite: Dangerous patch is dubbed 2.3 with a large number of changes. Players can start testing all of that now with the patch during a beta testing phase. Unfortunately exciting elements like the co-op multicrew functionality aren't quite live yet; the patch notes for the test include all of the details on multicrew ships, but also mentions in big bold letters they will be added in a future update.

The long-running Elite series got its start back in 1984 and quickly made a name for itself as a totally radical open world combat/space trading game. The bulk of the gameplay in the updated, modern follow-up to the series is focused on combat, resource gathering, trading and exploration. Online multiplayer is largely competitive in nature, a sort of "first to shoot gets the loot" scenario. There are special co-op missions you can initiate that give players cause to band together in teams, however, which is good enough in our book.

Super fans should, of course, support Frontier (the people who actually made the game) over everybody else if they hope to see Space Truckin' (With Pirates) 2, though that's probably a little bit out of your way, and your computer tends to throw up after downloading an executable straight from a website. You could give them all of your money by buying directly from their store, instead of picking it up at Steam, where Valve takes a cut of the profits (typically 30%). However, as of May 28th, if you purchase Elite: Dangerous from their store page, you can generate a Steam key for the game, free of charge.

I've seen a lot of footage of this game being played; most of that being people figuring out how to get their ship working and flying. Based on this trailer, though, I'm starting to get interested. Particularly if all of my wingmen are British.

Unfortunately, this mode doesn't revolve around defeating Jupiter's Cyborg God-King, Paul McCartney. At least, not explicitly. I suppose anything's possible in a galaxy of 400 billion procedurally generated star systems. What it does do is allow commanders to group up for a period of time so that they can run missions and explore together. Each participant gets an equal share of mission rewards, so nobody has to feel left out if they spent the entirety of a dogfight trying to figure out how to get the ship of out of hover mode. Frontier Developments have released a handy tutorial video to help run you through the basics of setting up a Wing.
