Evolve Stage 2 Going Extinct in September

Turtle Rock Studios' 4 v 1 FPS title originally launched in 2015 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. There were was some promise and interesting ideas, but it never really seemed to "click." The following summer (2016), the dev studio shifted the game to be strictly free-to-play on the PC (ditching PS4 and Xbox One) and retitled it Evolve Stage 2. While that may have opened the title up to a new group of players, it still wasn't enough to pull the title from the brink as just a few months after all that, Turtle Rock Studios parted ways with (or was removed from) the game's development altogether. That pretty much looked like the writing on the wall, then, but 2K said they'd keep the servers up and the game:

The announcement came from the developer and the publisher, 2K Studios. In their farewell post on their community site, Turtle Rock Studios talked about how much they enjoyed working on the title and how much they appreciate the support from the community through all its ups and downs.

For those unfamiliar with the Evolve's gigantic prey, let's go through a quick rundown of the latest additions to Stage 2.

Venture into the Deepest Dark in Evolve Stage 2

This free add-in, which is currently listed as being in beta, can be found in the Co-op Vs AI queue as a map variant. Rather than pit you and three friends against an A.I. controlled monster, The Deepest Dark seeks to provide something closer to the kind of linear co-op experience you'd find in other first-person shooters. Your main mission is to track down the Queen of the Gorgons in an overrun facility and take her down. If this kind of addition gains ground with the Evolve community, then additional "Co-Op Operations" could be added in the future.

Co-Op Mode Added to Evolve Stage 2

With update 2.05, there's an option now to queue up for Co-Op vs AI matchmaking, similar to what Blizzard's Overwatch does. This new queuing option will allow you and up to three other players team up to hunt and take down an AI controlled beast. Characters will still earn experience in this mode, and you'll also be able to earn Silver Keys, so if you prefer playing this way instead of against another person, it's a completely viable option.
