Generation Zero plunks you down in the countryside of Sweden and immediately things are shrouded in mystery. There is very little exposition and it is up to the player to figure out how the world ended up this way. The gameplay is a little different than your typical first-person shooter, balancing quiet exploration with tense skirmishes against feral machines. The game actually plays very similar to a battle royale game like PUBG where there are peaks and valleys of action. The valleys have you looting houses and cars, scavenging for ammunition and items to give you an advantage in combat. These quiet parts of the game build tension as the environmental storytelling paints a clear picture of the destruction that has happened at the hands of the machines. The peaks hit and cash in on that build-up, making firefights both frantic and also a huge release of tension once complete. It really is a rush.

Generation Zero Gameplay Trailer Emphasizes Survival Over GunfightsJason Love

When the title was first announced a couple months ago, one of the key ideas that was emphasized by the game's director, Emil Kraftling, was that this isn't a "go in guns blazing" kind of FPS, but a "guerrilla action game." The trailer actually shows off how some of that idea plays out as you get to see a few scenarios where a group of players lay an ambush for the machine foes, and either use different weapons (like a sniper rifle and an assault rifle) to take down a single target, or things in the environment, like an electrical breaker box. It also seems like you'll be working with friends to piece together clues and other details in the environment to figure out what happened and from whence the robots came. This is definitely not your typical FPS.

The announcement came early this morning from Avalanche on the new Generation Zero Twitter account, which was then retweeted by the developer's Twitter. As with all good video game announcements, there was a link to the official website and an announcement trailer to give us a little flavor of the title. Going beyond that, the website features a letter from Emil Kraftling, the game's director, that offers up his perspective on what the game is. Specifically, Emil says the team views this as a "guerilla action game, because it helps paint the picture of how the odds are stacked against you." He goes on to talk about how you'll be scavenging cars, sheds, and other things in the world to find some loot that will help you take on the robots, which are much bigger and stronger than you, a puny human; and sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor and you'll do better to avoid combat.
