Make New Friends in Kirby Star Allies Today With Second Free Update

Unlike the regular enemies in the game that are befriended by giving them a "Friendship Heart," the "Dream Friends" can only be recruited in the special "Dream Palaces" (in the Story mode, at least), where you spin the big roulette wheel to randomly get one of them. Once they become Kirby's friend, though, they can then be controlled by one of YOUR friends using another controller or Joy-Con. These new characters join up with Marx, Gooey, and Rick & Kine & Coo that were released back in March, and Bandana Waddle Dee, King Dedede, and Meta Knight that were available at launch. The Dream Friends can also be used in the other two co-op game modes, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and The Ultimate Choice.

Bringing your friends into the game first requires Kirby to "make friends" by using friendship hearts. Once Kirby makes a friend out of an enemy (rather than inhaling them and absorbing their essence), another player can join in. The more friends Kirby makes, the more friends can join in the fun (up to a max of 4). Whatever foes your buddies control, they'll be able to use their abilities and special moves. They can even change to a different enemy by befriending them, which may come in handy depending on what the level/situation requires. Players keep their characters between levels, too, which is nice so you don't have to keep adding your buddies back in all the time.

The sizzle reel doesn't go into too much detail, but from the E3 game page, it sounds like in addition to inhaling enemies and gaining their powers, Kirby can also befriend them and turn them into allies. Presumably it is these newly won over recruits that players two through four will be able to control. So only player one will get to utilize Kirby's copy abilities and the new tricks, like imbuing them with different elements.
