In a blog post on Steam, Starbreeze CEO Mikael Nermark explained that due to having “gone through something of a purgatory fire in the past year,” the decision was made that the content for PAYDAY 2 should be made available once again a la carte, this time without the promise of “forever free” content. Financial mismanagement seems to be an ongoing issue with Starbreeze and PAYDAY developer, OVERKILL. Our own Jason Love walked through PAYDAY 2’s previous tumultuous relationship with DLC and microtransactions, which can be found here, however of more import to this particular announcement is the reconstruction (i.e., bankruptcy) of Starbreeze late last year, as Eurogamer thoroughly reported here. The key takeaway from the article is when OVERKILL announced they were winding down support/development on PAYDAY 2 back in 2017, they did so believing they’d make money on their forthcoming Walking Dead game. They did not and now they and Starbreeze are in need of some source of revenue. Thus, they are spinning up PAYDAY 2 again and selling everything they can.
]]>If you do happen to hop in on the new content for Payday 2 be sure to pick up the new minigun as well, because there is nothing quite like coming home after work, grabbing friends and partaking in a relaxing robbery where you tote a minigun as you try to steal fantastical artifacts.
If you're into robbing banks while in transit, check out the trance-heavy trailer below.
While a specific date hasn't been nailed down, Overkill just released a dev diary to give us a brief update on the game's progress. In fact, it even includes a clip of the game running on the Switch's portable mode. Soon enough, you can make everyone around you on the train feel awkward as you plow through police, take hostages, and haul duffel bags of money around.
Since 2013 the game has since continual support with new content, maps, modes, and crossover promotions with dozens of other games. So go snag it right now, just fire up Steam and head to the store looking for PayDay 2.
Update twelve will include new characters, trophies and achievements, and a big one - tweaked controller options and settings. While this stuff is included for free, there's also a bunch of new content coming - including five sets of DLC. Yes, the Goat Simulator heist will finally find its way onto consoles.
The John Wick Weapon Pack that was released this past Thursday for $4.99 added four new weapons (the Contractor Pistol, the Desertfox Sniper Rifle, the Jackal Submachine Gun, and a Throwing Knife), four new masks (including a cute puppy), four new patterns and materials, and some new achievements. It's just about everything you'd need to go on a killing spree fueled by revenge.
Perron's Impressions
So what’s all the fuss regarding Payday 2’s latest update? The event kicked off last Friday, and every day since then has brought forth a new addition that ever so slightly changes your experience. For starters, your criminal’s hideout is now customizable (please keep in mind you'll need to be at least level 25). The safe house contains 16 common areas which can be individually upgraded with “continental coins.” Those concerned about opening up their real-world wallets to pimp their pads should know that coins can be earned by completing heists or side jobs. One notable aspect of customization involves mini games which can be added to your shelter. You will now have the ability to hone your melee skills with a punching bag, test that eagle-eye of yours on the shooting range, or practice your slap shot on a mini hockey arena.
All of these updates are bundled up in a package that developer Starbreeze is calling "The Big Score." This update will be applied to the console versions of PAYDAY 2 automatically and will include "more than 20 free content updates... [including] items like the First World Bank Heist, the Overkill Pack, the Jacket Character Pack, and more." Along with that free content, there are 10 paid DLC packs you can purchase for either $4.99 or $6.99 each, or buy together as a bundle for $39.99. If you don't own the game, then you can get everything for $49.99.

Included in this package are two heists - the Counterfeit and Undercover jobs - that have been adjusted to fit in with PAYDAY 2's gameplay, a new grenade launcher and melee weapon, four new masks, new materials and patterns, and two audio tracks that have been remixed by Simon Viklund. Currently, this DLC is only available for the PC/Steam version of the game.
The new heist takes place over the course of two days. Day one sees you tracking down goats in a city and bringing them to your getaway van, while day two finds you defending said goats.
