Initial impressions for me were mixed, mostly due to technical issues actually getting the game to successfully launch. Once past that hurdle you are thrown onto the beaches of a strange world having mysteriously dropped in from orbit. Players can choose between a few different classes - all your standards are here - close combat, ranged, and support with a few mixes in between. Classes dictate weapons and abilities you can use, and eventually you can unlock a subclass that lets you quickly switch depending on the scenario.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is available either as an update to existing Phantasy Star Online 2 installations (a massive 79 GB update on Xbox) or as a fresh download for new players. Once installed, the client launches directly into New Genesis, though access to the original Phantasy Star Online 2 will unlock after about half an hour of New Genesis story progression.

"Worldview", "Game System", "Graphics Engine", and "Character Creation" have all been completely redesigned. PSO2: NGS features an open world game system, with an updated battle system to take advantage of the new, persistent world. Players can move back and forth between "PSO2: NGS" and "PSO2" on the same PSO2 account! Empowered by a new graphics engine, "Character Creation" will offer more customization options than ever before. Players can also bring their character created in "PSO2: NGS" to the world of "PSO2". Also, players can share their character data well as lobby actions that obtained in "PSO2" to "PSO2: NGS".

The game actually takes place 1000 years after the current Phantasy Star Online 2 world and events have taken place, but despite that, there will be some back and forth capabilities for players of both games including some cosmetics, character items and more.
