For quite some time now, Rocket League has allowed users on various platforms to be randomly matched together in the game's various competitive modes, but prior to today, friends lists were segregated by platform.  Now, though, the in-game friends list is split into four tabs: 

That's not all, though!  Alongside the start of Season 8 of the game's Ranked mode, the "Salty Shores" update brings with it a brand new arena named, you guessed it, Salty Shores.  Developer Psyonix claims that it's their "sunniest map to date", which probably also means that it's the hottest.  I most certainly do not envy those poor drivers, sweltering in their turbo-infused cars.  Let's hope nobody has leather seats.

Specifically, it'll be the ’99 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 (from 2 Fast 2 Furious) and ’70 Dodge Charger R/T (from The Fast and The Furious).  Each of these will cost $1.99 and come with their own sets of decals.  The Skyline will have the 2Bold, 2Cool, 2Tuff, Clean Cut, The Clutch, and Home Stretch options, and the Charger will have the Alameda Twin, Flames, Good Graces, Rally, Sinclair, and Wheelman to choose from.  You can see both in action below:

Depending on which side of the pitch you find yourself, you'll be driving that big old ball towards the opposing team's goal in a Mario, Luigi, or Samus-themed car. If you're on the Orange side, you can use the "Mario NSR" or "Samus Gunship" cars, and on the Blue side you'll get "Luigi NSR" or a Varia Suit Samus car. I suspect everyone will want to be on the Orange team with that gunship car. There will also be some special Mario/Luigi hats that can be used with any car, and some special boosts (e.g., the Gunship's "Wave Beam") that are specific to the Nintendo cars. These new cars will be absolutely free for Switch owners, though you'll have to unlock them by meeting some in-game requirements that are (for now) unknown.

Along with the map and Steam Workshop Support, the game is also getting an interesting new feature with "Custom Training" mode. This mode will let players design their own training module by picking the map, the type of sequence, i.e., striker or goalie, and its difficulty. You'll then be placed into the map with the ability to place the car, the ball, and control the path the ball will take. Once you've got all that figured out and tested, you can upload it for others to enjoy. It's an interesting way to create some very specific shot training exercises and up your game.

The "Hoops" mode places a distinct emphasis on aerials as you'll be attempting to get the ball up in the air and over the rim of a giant hoop. This is the perfect mode in which to test your flying skills, or hone them. You can also purchase some new flags so you can proudly sport the logo of your favorite basketball team.
