All three characters have shown up in some form in previous iterations of Skylanders games. For example, Love Potion Pop Fizz (Valentine's Day Skylander) is a variant on Pop Fizz who has appeared in Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Swap Force. Love Potion Pop Fizz appears to be a reskin of Series 3 Fizzy Frenzy Pop Fizz, with all of the same abilities. Skylanders might have been marketed as a game for kids, but the addicting "gotta collect them all element" combined with fun and inventive gameplay have made it a staple in both adults and children’s gaming diet. We’re now on the fourth Skylanders game in the series, with the latest being called Skylanders Trap Team. This time...
The new trailer of course does not show the mental breakdown of our youth, but instead was created by the Skylander Team to get people excited for the game. And some of these kids are very excitable:

Spyro, now known as Spry, is a miniature hero turned powerful. With his magic based skills you can team up with another player for local 2 player co-op on more platforms than I wish to mention. First up, we have a trailer for Food Fight, one of the Skylanders that is included in the Skylanders Trap Team starter pack. He's a living artichoke that shoots vegetables out of a gun. Terrifying? Awesome? Terrifyingly awesome? It's your call!
The game play mode seems to be a mix of typical horde based gameplay combined with some light tower defense elements. As you progress through the waves of enemies a "Mystery Box of Doom" will open with larger enemies and bosses to defeat. According to the press release there 100 waves of destruction to wade through with your Skylanders. Sounds like the perfect mode to take on in co-op with a friend and earn some unlockables.
While Activision and Toys For Bob have been releasing much smaller versions of the Skylanders characters (about half their size) as promo figures, these were normally be used as cosmetic pets in past games, such as Swap Force. In Trap Team, however, these miniatures are being upgraded to be fully playable, able to gain levels, and develop full skill trees! Little about how the mini characters will differ from their bigger brethren is known, thought. We do know, however, that the mini Skylanders will be sold in pairs per character pack. Launching with the game will be new figures called Eon's Elite. These figures are re-releases of classic Skylander's figures with new poses and a fresh coat of paint - literally.
Last year's Skylanders Swap Force was the best in the series, fixing many longstanding nagging issues and improving the game with a brand new graphics engine. This year's Skylanders is called Skylanders Trap Team, and it's doing something that hasn't been done before in the series - instead of putting characters INTO the game, you are bringing them OUT.

Skylanders Trap Team introduces new Skylanders heroes known as Trap Masters as well as brand new Core Skylanders characters. You'll also find reposed fan-favorite Skylanders characters from previous series. The big addition is new "Trap" figures that align to specific elements which are used to trap enemies within the game. It's being touted as the first time characters not only go INTO the game, but come OUT too.
