For those not in the know, Soul Sacrifice is the Playstation answer to Monster Hunter, where groups of players team up to take down bigger and badder monsters. The titular sacrifice mechanic comes in when one of your homies goes down. You're given the opportunity to "save" them, which eats half of your current health but gets them back up into the fight. You can also "sacrifice" them, which takes them out of the fight for good, but does an enormous amount of damage to all the baddies on the map. Sacrificed team mates also don't get any experience points at the end of the mission, so be prepared to ruin friendships forever.

Soul Sacrifice has seen free updates on the PS Vita for the past five months, and it looks like the final update for the game is here. The 1.30 update includes new quests with familiar foes, but with the difficulty amped up.
The new content is accessed via the journal by navigating to Mad Chronicle > Inside Avalon > Avalon Pacts > F...
I've co-op'd with more random people in Soul Sacrifice than I have with any other game I've played so far this year --quite successfully, I might add. I've put well over a hundred hours into the Vita exclusive and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. Still, I have not been able to keep up with the bi-weekly boss additions. It doesn't help that they seem to be updated randomly during the week they come out. I can't sit around refreshing the PlayStation Store all day Tuesday. I'm a very busy and important man.

More free Soul Sacrifice DLC dropped this week. I finally pried myself away from the Vita version of Hotline Miami (Beyond Co-Op Review forthcoming) long enough to check it out. I nearly forgot how easy it is to pick up and play Comcept's twisted fantasy game. I jumped in, linked up with some randoms, sacrificed the souls of a few monsters, swiped some Lacrima, and was on my way. Smooth.

Soul Sacrifice will receive it's second update of free DLC next week. On June 11th the Dwarf and Ogre Archfiends will be added to the Librom, along with eight new missions, or pacts. If it's anything like last week's "Headless Knight and Starved Citizenry" DLC you can expect two discovery pacts and six battle pacts.

Free DLC is kind of like sex; even when it's bad, it's good. The new Soul Sacrifice DLC isn't bad. It's just brief. So the sex analogy still applies. The "Headless Knight and Starved Citizenry" pack features two new bosses, eight new missions (sort of), SNS (That's social network support. I had to look it up. I'm old. I admit it.) and a few other minor, but useful updates. There's also a new Black Rite, "Berserker," which can be downloaded separately. It's also free.

You may have seen some info on the free Soul Sacrifice DLC heading our way later this month. You may have even noticed the poster below in your local Gamestop. It's true: several new bosses have been confirmed as free DLC with eight of them having been identified. I would have mentioned something earlier, but I've been playing the game so much I forgot to write about it. This is easily my pick up and play guilty pleasure of the year (so far). If you haven't been keeping up with your Avalon Pacts, check out the image below and get an eyeful of the grotesque monsters soon to be marked for extermination.

I was talking to Nick the other day and I let it slip that I had put around 25 hours into the Soul Sacrifice demo. And I don’t mean the Japanese version that came out months ago. Somehow, between playing and writing about all the games I’m supposed to be playing and writing about - and doing my part in the benevolent dictatorship my wife and I hold over a household full of pugs and children- I managed to play the Soul Sacrifice demo for an entire day (not in one sitting). It’s been out for less than a week. Embarassing, I know.
