Stardew Valley's Local Co-Op Mode Has Arrived On Consoles

To clarify, this addition is specifically for the local version of cooperative play. Stardew Valley has offered online co-op for a few years now, but its fervent audience has still wanted to option to play together without needing separate gaming setups. It's a testament to developer ConcernedApe's devotion to the game that, even several years after release, major additions like this are still being released.

Speaking to the future of the game, Barone said in his dev blog post:

While the Xbox delay is unfortunate, Barone has already been at work on patches for the PlayStation 4 co-op. A later tweet from Barone from September 28th reads; “Hotfix patch for PS4 went out early this morning that should fix the crashes some people were experiencing in certain co-op situations, as well as the localized crafting recipe names bug”

Next Stardew Valley Update Will Allow Separate Cash In Co-Op

Luckily, version 1.4 of Stardew Valley is on its way, and with it will come the option to separate everyone's virtual wallets in the game's online co-op. Players starting new farms will have the option to enable separation from the start, and those with existing farms can simply speak to the mayor to switch between the two modes. Keep in mind, though, that making the split will divide the current cash amount evenly between all players. Also, regardless of whether or not cash is earned separately, all players will still share the other aspects of the map, such as the community center, mines, and cave.

Co-Op Update Now Available for Stardew Valley on Switch

This is the first console to receive the co-op update just a few months after it dropped onto the PC. This update also includes some new content that was patched into the PC version, including a new event called the Night Market that visits during the Winter and some other secrets besides. The Switch version also allows for four player co-op via local wireless LAN so if you have some friends over with their own Switch consoles you can play together. It's worth noting that a Nintendo Switch Online account is required to play the game online.

Exact console release dates are still unknown, but they're listed as "coming soon". In the meantime, those without a home computer will just have to gawk at the PC community as they enjoy these so-called "social activities". Alternatively, they can set the below trailer on repeat and mash on an unconnected controller to pretend they're actually playing, "younger sibling in the 90s" style.

In game development time frames can change pretty quickly, so this should be taken as a soft schedule rather than hard fact. Further, Barone has released pictures of 4-player Co-Op (via LAN) recently, which can be found here as well as below. While this news is exactly what we here at Co-Optimus like to hear, the inclusion of Co-Op is set to be a PC addition first before coming to consoles.

Online Co-Op Coming to Stardew Valley Next Year

In a blog post today, the game's publisher, Chucklefish, revealed their plans for adding co-op. When the feature gets added (more on that in a bit), up to three online players will be able to join another player's game as farmhands. These farmhands will be able to "farm, mine, fight, fish, forage, marry NPCs and take part in festivals." Farmhands will also have their own inventory, which can be managed by the host when your buddy isn't connected. Also worth noting is that "certain decisions can be made only by the main player: when to sleep, when to start and end festivals, and whether to side with Joja, for instance." This will be online co-op, only, too. It's specifically stated in that post that "[l]ocal multiplayer, split-screen... are not planned at this point."
