After two really strong outings with Trine 1 and 2, all three of us were a bit disappointed with what the third game brought to the table. Numerous physics glitches, quirky puzzles solutions, an extra mechanic requiring boring side missions to be completed, and finally a cliffhanger ending that left us scratching our heads.

This is a full three player co-op play through.

If you've never played a Trine game before, it follows three heroes with specific powers - A Knight, A Wizard, and a Rogue. Each character can manipulate the environment using real physics to solve puzzles in their own way. Adding a third dimension to the puzzles have made them a little trickier, but no less fun. 

The third game in the puzzle platforming Trine series received a major overhaul, turning a once 2D game into a gorgeous 2.5D experience. Players weren't sure about the change and have had plenty of words to share about Trine 3 since its PC launch, even though the core gameplay has remained largely the same. Players take control of one of three characters, each with unique abilities that help them traverse the puzzle and enemy ridden landscape. The Wizard can conjure boxes and levitate foes, the Knight can stab things with his stabby stabber, and the Thief has a bow and grappling hook used for exactly the things you think they'd be used for. By switching characters or inviting enough friends, you can work your way through the gorgeous world one puzzle at a time.

If you missed the other games, think of the Trine series as a modern version of The Lost Vikings. Three characters head out on the adventure, each with their own attacks, playing style and special abilities. In order to progress through the stages and defeat the enemies, you have to use their skills in concert by switching between characters. It's a swell set-up for a solo player, but when you throw in co-op for up to three people (online, local, or any combination of the two), you've got the makings of an amazing cooperative experience.

I found myself pausing this gameplay video within the first minute or so just to marvel at the initial field blanketed in the evening sunset.  That's to say nothing of the cave delving and shield gliding that occurs later in the video.  

An initial trailer, embedded below, shows the game's three heroes tackling a challenge they've never faced before - the third dimension. Previous games in the series were restricted to a 2D plane, meaning that the sequel's core mechanics are likely to evolve significantly as a result.
