DOOM and DOOM 2 Re-Releases Received Quality Of Life Updates

The official post from Bethesda fleshes out some more details of the update, stating that “The re-releases of DOOM (1993) and DOOM II have been decked out with an arsenal of new options and quality-of-life adjustments, including a Quick Weapon Select feature, improved Level Select function, added Aspect Ratio and Brightness options, a new split-screen HUD and more!” That full post can be found on Bethesda’s website, here.

E1M8 is technically a remake of the old map, but it's backed by two decades of game design experience, so the changes are anything but subtle. The level is long and brutally difficult, with paths that loop back on themselves and force you to make smart item pick-ups so you aren't left hanging later on. Enemies are suitably placed to keep you pulling the trigger, and there are a few surprises to stumble across, as well. Feels just like the old days.

One of the things we saw in the videos were finish moves, almost fatality like combat in first person - likely a gameplay mechanic to conserve ammo. If you've followed the development of a mod for DOOM called Brutal DOOM, you know this has existed for some time. So I did what any good gamer would do, I installed Brutal DOOM and checked it out...for science!

I still remember when my father brought home the shareware copy of DOOM from his office. Someone had made a copy of the floppy disk and passed it around to friends. Installing it on my old 386 and seeing the dimly lit world of the game for the first time, that opening guitar riff, and the gentle head bob has you ran - it was magical. Things got even better the day I bought a 14.4 BAUD modem and was able to play cross town multiplayer and co-op with my friend a few streets over. DOOM set the bar for gaming for a lot of people during my generation and it's influence is still felt today.

Doom Returns to the Xbox Live Arcade

Back in October of 2010, Doom was pulled from the XBLA due to licensing issues. The title is a grandfather of the modern first person shooter, and it should be experienced by, well, everyone. It's been over a year since the game was pulled from the Arcade library, but today marks its triumphant return.

One thing that's become increasingly apparent in today's age of digital downloads - they can disappear at anytime. Most times this happens because of expiring contracts between content providers. Such is the case with DOOM on Xbox Live Arcade. The game was originally released before Zenimax Media actually owned id Software.Once that contract expired there was no place for your money to go when purchased, so the game has been pulled.

id's timeless classic DOOM game has found it's way onto another platform, the iPhone/iPod Touch. I believe this makes it the game's 4,371st different platform - including the calculator, handheld, console, downloadable, web, java, and toaster based versions.

Co-Op Classics: DOOM

For the past few Co-Op Classics columns, I've been trying to hit some of the key co-op games of the past. Double Dragon and the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade game are on most people's list of classics. Today, we move on to what many consider to be the most influential game ever. This game spawned hundreds of clones, and almost singlehandedly birthed an entire game genre, the first person shooter. A technical marvel, a violent, intense atmosphere, awesome level design and downright scary foes, all wrapped up in a co-op package, make DOOM one of the greatest co-op games of all time.

Doom Coming to iPhone Next Week, Lacks Co-Op

Classic co-op game Doom is coming to the iPhone next week, though the version is actually based on the Doom III game. Titled Doom: Resurrection, the game is rebuilt from Doom III assets and code - no small feat.

It looks like I spoke too soon, another great co-op title just popped up on Amazon.com for a discounted price. Doom, sporting four player split screen and online co-op, is available for less than $3 on Amazon's website.
