Indie developers have the coolest ideas. The platform adventure game EDGAR is currently in production, bringing everybody's favorite macabre poet Edgar Allan Poe into the gaming spotlight.
EDGAR is set in an alternate version of Victorian London where Poe hunts down Jack the Ripper in an attempt to rescue his wife. Really, when you think about it, there's no better choice for the star of an action game than ole Poe. You might have to think about it really hard, but from the early screenshots and the teaser video, we're not about to argue with his effectiveness as a sidescrolling combat expert.
EDGAR will focus on gathering loot. Developer Wrought Iron Games uses the word "lootfest", so picture something much greater than a few pithy power-ups and a top hat or two. The dev blog is updated on a semi-regular basis featuring artwork, screenshots, gameplay thoughts and other tidbits from the early alpha stage. The artwork looks superb, and the game seems to draw inspiration from the likes of Out of this World and Flashback, though with less emphasis on realism and more on shooting bats.
The best news is EDGAR will have both online and local co-op play. Exactly what that will involve we're not sure, but a gentlemans' adventure will most assuredly be had. No release date has been set yet. EDGAR will see a PC release at the very least, with Mac and Linux versions a high probability. The team has also discussed mobile/tablet versions as well.
