A long time ago, Starship Troopers was a book by the great Robert Heinlein. Then it was a movie directed by the talented Paul Verhoeven. Lately, it has taken the form of Starship Troopers: Extermination, a large-scale co-op shooter from Offworld on Steam Early Access. Soon, Extermination will fully launch, not only on Steam but also on Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 consoles. The war against the bugs needs recruits, and it's nearly time to enlist.
Extermination is an adaptation of the cult classic film, so players won't be running around in the mech suits from the book and TV series. Instead, you'll choose from six classes and then join the battle to retake and fortify bases on bug infested planets. The scale of the fights is truly impressive, with huge hordes of carnivorous creatures swarming the vulnerable human soldiers. Teaming up, constructions walls, requisitioning ammo, and fighting like hell in the 16-player co-op matches is the only way to survive. If the team puts up enough of a fight, they'll be able to evac before they succumb to the alien hordes.
Having played the Early Access version for a while, I can say that the game does a great job of capturing the large-scale battles of the film. Things will be even more immersive when the version 1.0 update arrives. With it will come Casper van Dien as the voice of General Johnny Rico, the film's protagonist. The update will also add a new single-player campaign mode that includes "25 distinct missions and a variety of unique PvE combat scenarios across various environments." A second chapter will be added sometime after the launch.
Starship Troopers: Extermination costs $29.99 on Steam at present, but the price will rise after launch. The game will fully launch on Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and Steam in October. Read more about it at StarshipTroopersExtermination.com. Remember: the only good bug is a dead bug!
