At Last, Nintendo Announces the Switch 2

The new console looks a lot like the old one but larger.

After months of leaks and rumors, Nintendo finally announced the Switch 2 a few days ago. The successor to the Switch will be bigger and presumably more powerful, and it will be backwards compatible. Details beyond the appearance of the hardware and the mouse function of the new Joy-Cons are scarce, but we'll find out more in April.

All of the official word on the Switch 2 comes from the above announcement trailer. Outside of that, Nintendo hasn't said much else so far. A new Mario Kart for Switch 2 is shown in the trailer, but other titles haven't been confirmed yet. Things that we do not know include: whether the Joy-Cons will use Hall-effect sticks (to avoid drift), the actual power of the console, and its price. Let's hope for some co-op games at launch and for older Switch games to receive enhancements when played on the new console.

Nintendo will issue a Nintendo Direct announcement about the Switch 2 on April 2. There will be a consumer preview event in a few major cities later that month. The system itself will launch sometime in 2025.
