Long ago, Technos was one of the big Japanese developers, gifting the Double Dragon series and many other fine games to the world. Sadly, the studio closed its doors in 1996. Happily, however, Arc System Works bought the Technos name and library in 2015 and has produced many fine games since then. 2020's Double Dragon & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle compiled an impressive selection of Technos' NES games. This year, Arc System Works will follow up with Super Technos World: River City & Technos Arcade Classics.
The new compilation will feature these 12 games (co-op titles appear in bold):
- China Gate (1988, Arcade)
- The Combatribes (1990, Arcade)
- The Combatribes (1993, Super NES)
- Downtown River City Baseball Story (1993, Super NES)
- DunQuest (1995, Super NES)
- Kunio's Dodgeball Time, C'mon Guys! (1993, Super NES)
- Kunio’s Oden (1994, Super NES)
- River City Renegade (Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-kun in Japan)(1992, Super NES)
- Shadow Force (1993, Arcade)
- SugoroQuest -DICENICS- (1994, Super NES)
- Super Dodge Ball (1996, Neo Geo)
- Xain'D Sleena (1986, Arcade)
River City Renegade
That's five co-op games! All but one of the five feature 2-player co-op, whereas the arcade version of The Combatribes supports 3 players. The Combatribes, Shadow Force, and River City Renegade are beat 'em ups. It might look redundant to include two versions of The Combatribes, but each version has advantages and disadvantages over the other. As for China Gate, it's an action platformer with a somewhat hideous art style.
Noticeably absent from the collection are the three arcade Double Dragons. These weren't present in the Double Dragon & Kunio-kun Retro Brawler Bundle, but the first two arcade games are available as part of Hamster's Arcade Archives lineup on PlayStation and Switch.
This collection will offer the following enhancements:
- The new “Suspend Save” feature allows players to save the current state mid-game at any time!
- Critical issues preventing game progression have also been addressed, leaving no unintended obstacles to completing the games.
- Online support means you can hop online to play with or against long-distance friends.
Super Technos World: River City & Technos Arcade Classics will debut on PlayStation, Switch, and Steam on April 23. We can't wait!
