Sony and Atlus will be shutting down the servers for Demon's Souls on February 28, 2018. Eight years after it made a splash in the "hardcore" action RPG scene, it seems like the game will finally be riding into the sunset...
Playstation Network has started up a two-week-long sale on spooky games and movies as befits this time of the year. Each week will have a slew of Halloween-esque sales: up to 65% off for everyone, and up to 80% off for PS Plus members. And the good news is that there's a healthy dose of co-op games included in the sale!
If you could get a demon's soul pretty much for free, you totally would, wouldn't you? And how about Demon's Souls for free, while you're at it? The pleasantly punishing role playing game that's famous for being about as forgiving as a swift kick to the face is slated to be free for PlayStation Plus members for the month of April. Several other games will also but free, but... Demon's Souls!
Are you looking for a challenge to ring in the new year? The PlayStation Network has got you covered. The hard-as-nails action RPG, Demon's Souls, will be available for download on January 8 for $19.99. This is the "spiritual predecessor" of 2011's equally punishing Dark Souls.
Would you let someone punch you in the face for 13 bucks? Metaphorically, of course. Dark Souls is on sale. Again. This all seems strangely familiar. A few weeks ago Dark Souls was on sale for $14.99. Today the lighthearted family game is on sale at Amazon for $12.99. Okay, we all know it's not a lighthearted family game, but you can only say the game is ridiculously difficult so many times before the words "brutal," "unforgiving," "punishing" and "please make it stop" lose all meaning.
The punishing fantasy game, Dark Souls, is on sale today from Amazon. You can ruin your whole week, maybe even your whole year, for the low, low price of 15 bucks. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions are both available. I should note that this is the bare-bones version of the game. It doesn't include the recently released (at least for consoles) Artorias of the Abyss DLC. You'll want to pick that up if you want the whole soul crushing experience. Still, the core game is a hell of a ride.
Like everything else in the Dark Souls universe, accessing the new "Artorias of the Abyss" DLC isn't easy. The new content adds a whole new area, complete with new enemies, NPCs, weapons, and armor. When I spoke with a Namco Bandai rep at E3, I asked how players would gain entry into the new area, Oolacile. He was kind enough to oblige.
It seems like only a month ago we reported the Demon's Souls servers would be shutting down on May 31st, forever eliminating the game's unique online multiplayer features. And it seems like only last September we reported that the servers would continue to run, despite Atlus claiming they would be shut down that October. Hey, wait. I think I'm beginning to see a pattern here!
Epic Games' Cliff Bleszinski, famous for his work on the Unreal Tournament and Gears of War series, has gone on record stating that many Japanese developers are leaving an opportunity on the table by skipping out on co-op and multiplayer modes in their games. While Bleszinski said he doesn't believe every game has to have a tacked on multiplayer experience, there's definitely room for it in titles because of the replayability it adds.
Bad news, lost souls of Boletaria! Demon's Souls servers are going offline forever next month. Atlus has announced a server shutdown before, but I think they really mean it this time. If you decide to fire up your copy of Demon's Souls you'll be greeted with the following message:
By my calculations, I haven't posted anything about Dark Souls in about 68 days. Amazing, I know. Luckily for me (and you) Facebook has given us something post-worthy. 21 hours ago the official Dark Souls page began teasing an announcement. There has already been rampant speculation concerning DLC or a PC port, both of which would be well received by the community.
Earlier this week we brought you news of an online petition to bring Dark Souls to PC. I know, online petitions are a dime a dozen. Hell, even that's a little pricey. Despite the perceived futility of online requests, the Dark Souls for PC petition has managed to gain over 66,000 signatures in the week it has been active. This outpouring of support for a PC version has not gone unnoticed by the higher-ups at Namco Bandai.
