It's been planned for sometime, in fact, Epic Games have said that Fortnite's "Save the World" co-op mode would go free to play to match the success of the Battle Royale mode by the end of 2018. But in the latest blog post from the game's developer, it looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer till more folks can get their hands on the co-op play without dropping some hard earned cash.
Over the weekend, Epic announced that cross-play and cross-progression support would be added to the Xbox One version at some point of Fortnite: Save the World (PvE co-op) and Fortnite: Battle Royale (PvP) to allow those players to team up with friends on the PC/Mac. While this means that those players will now be able to team up with PS4 players OR Xbox One players when taking on the husks, there is still no cross-play between the PS4 and Xbox One.
If you're looking for more PvE activities to do within Epic's crafting/building/shooter game, Fortnite, then you're in luck! A whole new mode, called "Save the World," has been added in today's update and it features new heroes, weapons, and defenders that can be obtained by playing and completing this challenge.
A couple weeks back Epic Games teased that a "big update" for Fortnite would be coming soon and include a number of tweaks/balances/QoL fixes, as well as a new "survival" mode. That update, titled "Survive the Storm," is here... at least, that was the original plan.
Amidst the multitude of stability patches this week and last, Epic had some bigger news about their third-person shooting/building title, Fortnite. A portion of the dev team is devoted to adding a new Survival mode that will challenge players to fight off the hordes of Husks for up to 14 in-game days.

After first getting teased six years ago, many wondered if Epic's Fortnite would actually ever see the light of day or if it would just go down as an experiment for the developer.
