Warframe, the free-to-play action/shooter RPG, has been trucking along since 2013. Gamers can download the MMO-like space ninja game on all the big platforms, including PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch. As multiplayer-focused games age, though, playerbase becomes an issue. It's hard to make war on the frames if you can't find anybody to play with. Thankfully, that will soon become less of an issue when Warframe gains cross-play and cross-save before the end of the year.
The cross-platform announcement came during this weekend's TennoCon 2021. Sheldon Carter of Digital Extremes explained:
"Community is incredibly important to us. Opening up cross-play and cross-save is just one of many more efforts we'll take on to bring more players together including extending Warframe's fast, fluid, action combat experience to other global gaming platforms."
The cross-platform experience will include both cross-play and cross-save, so gamers will be able to hop between and play with others from any supported platform. Those platforms will include mobile as well, as Digital Extremes also revealed the upcoming mobile version of Warframe during the event. Having recently enjoyed some cross-play in (the non-cooperative) Super Bomberman R Online, I'm excited about the possibilities these cross-platform features will bring.

In Warframe, players become members of the Tenno, an ancient race of space ninjas. Collecting and customizing various "warframes" (playable characters) and teaming up with others to completes missions is the name of the game, which has historically offered an excellent experience for free and paying players alike.
