Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is a TMNT-themed roguelike from Super Evil Megacorp. Originally an Apple Arcade game, Splintered Fate made the jump to Switch back in July. Not long after, the Steam version was announced. Now it's finally here, and it's still a kick-butt Ninja Turtles experience. Splintered Fate supports 4-player local and online co-op, plus cross-play with existing versions, so finding a foursome will be cinch.
In TMNT: Splintered Fate, the Turtles must travel through a series of portals as they fight to rescue their kidnapped master. Each Turtle has unique abilities, such as Donatello's useful perk that heals him a little at the start of each fight. The team must battle their way through a series of rooms in each area, with both a mini-boss and a big boss providing deadly threats. Players will collect various currencies during a run that can be spent on permanent upgrades back in the lair. It's a lot like Hades, but with the heroes in a half-shell.
The Steam version of the game runs well and looks nicer than the Switch version, just as we'd hoped. The start of each run is still bogged down by a lengthy loading period, which is a downer. After that, though, the actual runs move nice and quickly. Online multiplayer has been improved across all versions of the game, allowing players to join each other via room codes or use matchmaking to find a team. I was able to find a match right away, and it definitely increased my enjoyment compared to playing solo.
We'll dive deeper into the Steam version of Splintered Fate as we prepare our co-op review. Stay tuned, dudes!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate costs $29.99 on Steam and Switch. The Steam version is fully Steam Deck compatible.
