The Co-Op Release Alert for the Week of 7.16.2012
What do we have here? One new game this week and a rehash of bundled releases from three weeks ago? Smells like summer. Let's get this over with.

Welcome to Good Coop. Bad Coop. a tale of three friends who love playing games together. Episode 9 is the last part of mission 3, where the boys finally catch their fugitive and 'persuade' him to talk.
Time for another delightful installment of Beyond Co-Op, where we tell you about all the non-cooperative news that matters. Anything else that happened last week was just white noise! This week we got some fun announcements coming out of Comic-Con, a slew of fighting game news, and a Kickstarter campaign that might just shake up the games industry.
The past few years have given us Spider-Man games on an almost annual basis, including the recent Amazing Spider-Man movie tie in and the excellent Shattered Dimensions. Sadly, only one Spidey game in this console generation offered co-op: 2007's mediocre Friend or Foe. If we head back in time even further, we have to travel quite a ways until more co-op webslinging shows up, and one of these games is the topic of today's Co-Op Classics: Spider-Man the Video Game, which hit arcades in 1991.
Might & Delight's previous Pid trailer certainly wowed me with its fantastic music. As it turns out, the game's soundtrack comes from a group called Retro Family (who sound quite similar to The Minibosses). The latest video coming from Might & Delight eschews gameplay footage in favor of showing Retro Family in action. The song will accompany a battle with one of Pid's gigantic bosses, The Butler. Don't worry, we've got new screens of The Butler to show you as well.
We're a bit late with this feature, but that doesn't make it any less pertinent. Last week we spoke with Dylan Barker, designer and semi-community manager for Cadenza Interactive, about what's going on with their latest game and their Kickstarter campaign (which is now closed). Dylan offers some interesting insight into their design process this time around and what Kickstarter means to them, and what happens if it fails (which it sadly did). So give it a listen!
The lame lack of summer releases can only be counted by the Steam Summer Sale. Our backlogs are not happy.
Anomaly: Warzone Earth has been dubbed a "Tower Offense" game. Players form an assault squad and try to defeat alien defense towers. Simple enough. The squad is not controlled directly, rather a player chooses unit paths on the battlefield. In the PC, Mac, and XBLA versions, you could control a commander who would help advancing units by distributing power-ups. Alas, these were all single player affairs.
It has been revealed that co-op has finally come to Assassin's Creed 3. The new mode dubbed 'Wolf Pack' will feature four player co-op that will have your team taking down NPC targets. This is a first for the franchise and we are definitely excited to be running as a group rather than a one man wolf pack.
Back in May, we caught wind that console MOBA Awesomenauts would possibly be getting not just one, but two new characters in an upcoming free patch. Looks like the information was good, as we recently got word that patch 1.1 will indeed include Coco Nebulon and Derpl Zork, rounding out the Awesomenauts roster to 8 characters.
Game Informer recently spied a teaser website for Earth Defense Force 4. The site offers no details, so we don't know what platforms will carry the game, if it will come to the U.S., or if it even supports co-op. So why are we covering it? The last two games in the franchise were cheesy awesome fun, and they both support co-op, that's why.
We're in the middle of a summer drought (not just in gaming either), but the parched release schedule does offer us Orcs Must Die 2 on July 31. As the game approaches, more and more details creep our way, just like the relentless orcish hordes. The latest bit of news reveals a nice bonus for owners of the first game.
