The multi-award winning Dead Nation just got a little better. A new patch is scheduled to go live Monday, March 7th that enables online voice chat. We gave the zombie twin stick shooter a 4 out of 5 for our Co-Op Review for the high production values and persistent upgrade system. We balked a little at the high difficulty level of the game. Finnish Developer Housemarque addresses this issue in the new patch with checkpoint saves. They also promise "even further surprises for all the Dead Nation players out there!"
Welcome to Beyond Co-Op, a weekly piece that talks about industry stories that may or may not be related to co-op gaming.
The very successful, though single-player title, indie game Spelunky from the PC will be making the much anticipated shift to the consoles. Spelunky is a puzzle platformer that takes place in caves, featuring a spelunker. The title has received a lot of attention, and been recently announced on the Xbox LIVE Arcade. During GDC 2011 a few websites noticed a screens that showed multiple players in the game.
The robot-run AI Apocalypse we imagined probably didn’t look much like Shoot Many Robots, but perhaps that’s a good thing. It’s so different, in fact - you’ll get to decide who the enemy is. There is an online contest being hosted by Shoot Many Robots developer Demiurge Studios called “Design Many Robots” that puts you in the designers street.
In anticipation of GDC we pushed back our new blog topic for March until tomorrow. Because of that, we had a last minute entry in the February blog “My Backlog, Let me show you it.” Just a reminder, tomorrow we’ll be posting a new blog topic for March - and we want to see what you’ve got in our blogs. Let’s take a look at an example of a blog that deserves front page attention.
For Co-Op Casual Friday this week, we turn our heroic gaze to Champions Online, a super-hero MMO that recently adopted the free to play model. Read along as we detail the first adventure of our family's father-son team, which has now been officially dubbed "The Dark Duo".
PAX East is next week and the Co-Opticrew is gearing up for the trip up to Boston. If you're coming, be sure to look for us - we'll be the ones holding hands and skipping merrily through the convention center. In the meantime we'll be playing games...lots and lots of games. Highlighted this weekend are Killzone 3, Dragon Age Origins, and Red Dead Redemption. Epic...totally epic.
There's a new game that just hit closed beta in the free to play browser based market that's caught our eye. It's called Gunshine.net and its from a new company named Supercell that was founded by ex-Remedy developers and invested in by ex-Sony executive Phil Harrison's investment firm.
We just got a handful of new screens for the co-op friendly and impossibly difficult Dark Souls. The screens show off a variety of environments and characters - all clad in medieval style armor and weapons. Some screens show off the co-op action where the players are facing some truly frightening looking creatures of ridiculous size. There's no doubt in my mind this game is going to be difficult - but it may just be incredibly rewarding.
