The Co-Opticrew has emerged once more into a year full of opportunity. Will we take advantage of this arbitrary period to renew ourselves physically and mentally? Unlikely! Instead, we'll be doing what we do best, playing video games and watching the world around us crumble.
Saber Interactive’s World War Z has finally received the much anticipated Horde Mode as part of Season 2’s lineup of free content. Simply titled “Horde Mode Z”, the new mode brings waves of undead upon the players who will have to scavenge, explore, and fight for survival. The update also adds a new zombie type, The Bomber, who spawns in any game mode and brings an “explosive twist” - it explodes when shot. However, if players are more careful they can disable the explosive-toting undead (as seen in the trailer below) and gather rare supplies to aid their survival efforts. The Season 2 content for World War Z is free and available now across Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
Gears 5 kicked off its second “Operation” (i.e., season) last month, called “Operation: Free For All.” The Title Update 3 brought a slew of bug fixes, maps, and the new Free For All PvP mode to the game, but that’s not all we got for December. Much like in real life, Christmas came upon us and the COGs faster than we had anticipated and with it came some holiday-themed content for Gears 5 in the form of the annual Gearsmas event.
On this, the very last weekend before Christmas, the Co-Opticrew is gathering their friends and family, heating up a nice warm cup of cocoa, and just going ham on some robotic weaponry. We'll be blastin' all weekend long from the safety of our ships, mechs, and space suits.
There are quite a few open-world/survival games out there these days; from the fantastical to the prehistoric and even in space, you're not lacking for options. However, not all of these games support co-op play, and even fewer (none?) support mechs. Enter Iron City Games' open-world, survival/tactical FPS game, GearStorm.
Rebellion’s Zombie Army Trilogy will be limping over (as zombies do) to the Nintendo Switch come the first half of 2020. The game is set to include all previously released content, including the Horde mode and all story chapters, as well as an exclusive feature to the Nintendo version: wireless multiplayer for up to four players. More ways to play with friends means more co-opportunities to enjoy!
Team17 and Ghost Town Games have added some free content to the wonderful world of Overcooked! 2. If you're looking to get into the holiday mood with some mince pies and Christmas puddings, then you might want to fire up the game and enjoy the free "Winter Wonderland" update, which was released just a couple days ago.
Not too long ago, keen observers noticed an interesting bullet point on the official Luigi's Mansion 3 website just prior to its release. Specifically, that "paid DLC will come to Luigi's Mansion 3 in the future, adding new content to the ScareScraper and ScreamPark multiplayer modes." However, no other information was offered. Earlier this week, Nintendo finally revealed what that content will entail, and how much it will cost.
We did a "Co-Op Roundup" earlier this week of all the new co-op games that were announced/revealed during this year's Game Awards, but one slipped past us. Bossa Studios has invited us back into the world of surgery simulation with Surgeon Simulator 2, and this time, it won't be just you putting on a surgical mask and sharpening your surgical hatchet. Based on the trailer and language in the press release, four player co-op (we're assuming online) will be supported in the game.
Dead Mage Studios' rogue-lite action-RPG, Children of Morta, will be getting some free (and paid) content over the next several months. The developer recently released a roadmap that shows their plans to add more to the game, including a feature we're all fans of around here: online co-op.
The second DLC pack for MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE 3: The Black Order, titled "Rise of the Phoenix," will arrive next Monday and brings with it four new playable characters (Gambit, Cable, Phoenix, and Iceman), and a new game mode that mixes co-op with competitive play. The "Danger Room" pits two teams of four players against one another as they attempt to be the first ones to clear out a room of foes.
Last week, Geoff Keighley held the fifth annual Game Awards where games and developers were honored. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice won the "Game of the Year" award (and "Best Action/Adventure Game"), Luigi's Mansion 3 won "Best Family Game" (the co-op is good), and Destiny 2 won "Best Community Support." Amidst all that, there were also some big announcements, including the reveal of the next generation of Xbox.
